Medication Administration Training (MAT) for Childcare Providers

The MAT course is required of childcare providers who work in licensed or regulated child day programs and who give medication to children. It is required by the Code of Virginia.
The MAT course is a competency based course approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and Virginia Department of Social Services to train providers to safely administer medications to children.
All courses are facilitated by approved trainers who are registered nurses.
We offer 3 different type of MAT Classes:
Medication Administration Training - Independent Study (MAT-IS)
Medication Administration Training-Independent Study (MAT-IS) is a 2 part course. Here’s how it works:
Part 1: A free online course that MUST be completed through the MAT Online Learning Center prior to the Part 2 session. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of completion which you must bring with you to the Part 2 class.
Part 2: Practice & Testing
This is held in a classroom setting and is facilitated by an approved trainer. You will review and practice the skills learned in Part 1, perform skills competency demonstrations and take a 20 question open book written test. You will have two attempts at each.
Each participant must bring these items to class:
✓ Part 1 Certificate of Completion
✓ Current CPR & First Aid Card(s) ✓ Photo I.D.
Course Length: 4 – 4 1/2 Hours
Cost: $150
Medication Administration Training - Renewal
Medication Administration Training – Renewal is a two-part course.
Part 1 is a free online course that MUST be completed through the MAT Online Learning Center prior to the Part 2 session. Upon successful completion of this online course you will receive a certificate of completion which you must bring to the Part 2 class.
Part 2: Skills Demonstration Test
This is facilitated by an approved trainer but does NOT include any review or practice or written test.
Each participant must bring these items to class:
✓ Part 1 Certificate of Completion
✓ Current CPR & First Aid Card(s)
✓ Photo I.D. ✓ Current MAT Certificate.
Course Length: Approximately 1 Hour
Cost: $125
Allergy & Anaphylaxis Medication Administration Training (AMAT - Formerly Emergency MAT)
AMAT is for providers in licensed or regulated child day programs who do not ordinarily administer medications, but who supervise children who may need a rescue inhaler, liquid Benadryl or an emergency injection of epinephrine using an auto-injector device (EpiPen or Auvi-Q).
PART 1 is free and MUST be completed online prior to class through the MAT Online Learning Center.
Part 2: Practice and Testing
Part 2 of the AMAT course is held in a classroom setting and is facilitated by an approved Trainer. You will review and practice the skills learned in Part 1, then perform the skills competency demonstration testings. You will have two attempts at testing.
Each participant must bring these items to class:
✓ Part 1 Certificate of Completion
✓ Current CPR & First Aid Card(s)
✓ Photo I.D.
Course Length: 3 – 3 1/2 Hours
