Medication Aide – DBHDS

Purpose of Course

Persons trained in curriculum approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing must be 18 years of age or older and may administer medication in facilities licensed by the Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services (DBHDS), Substance Abuse Services, Department of Social Services, Department of Education and the Department of Juvenile Justice. The Code of Virginia states that only those drugs which are normally self-administered may be administered by a medication aide. These drugs must not require procedures that cannot be properly performed by an unlicensed person without jeopardizing his/her health, safety and welfare.
